General VR questions

What exactly does Changefied do?

Changefied develops interactive VR learning environments to strengthen people’s self-reliance. We focus on neurodivergent people, while welcoming others with a suitable learning need.

Participants act, make choices and repeat tasks rather than only watching or listening. Virtual Public Transport focuses on travel skills; Virtual TechLab focuses on assembling a desktop PC. The teacher or support professional adapts the experience to the participant’s cognitive abilities, pace and learning goals. Technology is the tool, not the end goal.

Who are our VR learning environments suitable for?

Schools, care and support organisations and public authorities can use the environments as part of a supported learning process. Suitability depends on the person and learning goal, not on a diagnosis or age alone.

The responsible professional considers goals, cognitive abilities, controls, guidance and sensory demands. Follow the headset manufacturer’s age and safety advice. VR is not suitable for everyone.

Why does Changefied use 6DoF VR technology?

Six degrees of freedom (6DoF) means that a headset tracks both rotation and movement. Participants can look around, move and interact with virtual objects, making active practice possible.

This does not automatically mean a participant can apply the skill outside VR. Guidance and real-world practice remain important.

Virtual Reality and motion sickness: what should we know?

Some people experience nausea, dizziness, headaches or tired eyes when using VR. Introduce it gradually, use an appropriate setup and a clear, safe space, and follow the manufacturer’s advice.

Stop if someone feels unwell or overwhelmed; do not pressure them to continue. Discuss questions about medical suitability with a qualified healthcare professional. A comfortable experience cannot be guaranteed for everyone.

How are safety and privacy managed when using VR?

The responsible professional assesses suitability, provides a clear physical space and remains available during practice.

Privacy also depends on the headset, accounts, screen sharing and the organisation’s setup. Agree how personal data will be handled and check any relevant data-processing arrangements. Contact us about your intended configuration; do not assume that no data is processed by any device or service. Read our privacy policy (Dutch).

How does VR support practice of procedural memory and executive functions?

Performing and repeating sequences of actions gives participants opportunities to practise procedural memory: remembering how to do something. Tasks also involve executive functions such as planning, holding information in mind, focusing attention and adjusting when a situation changes.

The teacher or support professional adapts the experience to the participant’s cognitive abilities, pace and learning goals. Practice within these tasks is not proof that all executive functions improve generally. The professional assesses application outside VR; outcomes vary. Explore active travel practice.

Is VR more effective than traditional therapy?

Our learning environments are not a replacement for therapy or professional guidance. They can provide an additional practice setting when appropriate for the person and their goals.

We do not make a general claim that VR is more effective than therapy. Discuss its role with the professional responsible for the participant’s care or learning.

8 questions

Virtual Public Transport

Virtual OV is a VR training programme for neurodivergent people (autism, mild intellectual disability, speech and language disorder, acquired brain injury) to build independence and social skills in a safe environment.

Neurodivergence and Virtual Public Transport

Our focus is on neurodivergent people and their opportunities for choice, participation and everyday independence. Others with a suitable learning need are also welcome.

A diagnosis does not automatically make VR suitable. The responsible teacher, travel trainer or support professional considers each person’s needs, goals and experience.

Who is Virtual Public Transport for?

It is for people who need support with travel skills, such as planning, processing travel information, making choices or asking for help.

The teacher, travel trainer or support professional selects exercises and connects them to real-life journeys. There is no universal pathway or pace that works for everyone. For schools and support organisations.

Which VR headsets are compatible with Virtual Public Transport?

The application is offered on different standalone VR headsets. Availability and features can differ by headset model and software version.

Confirm compatibility with your intended version and configuration before purchasing equipment. Also discuss any screen-sharing requirements with us.

Do we need an internet connection to use Virtual Public Transport?

The basic modules can be used offline; updates require a connection.

Installation, headset accounts and screen sharing may have their own connection requirements. Check and test the full setup you intend to use.

Can Virtual Public Transport support citizenship education?

Travel skills can connect to personal goals around participation and self-reliance. A teacher can link exercises to their citizenship curriculum and discuss choices, asking for help and participation in everyday life.

The application does not replace a curriculum or, by itself, guarantee that formal learning objectives are met.

How can Virtual Public Transport support independent travel?

Begin with a personal goal agreed with a teacher, travel trainer or support professional. Practise through action, reflection and repetition, followed by appropriate real-world practice.

The environment is fictional, not a digital copy of the participant’s own route. Completing a VR exercise is not proof that someone can travel independently. The professional assesses the next step and the support needed.

Which sensory settings can be adjusted?

Discuss the scenarios and settings available in your version. Introduce the experience gradually and consider visual and sound stimuli as well as the demands of using the controls.

Not every aspect is customisable. Stop or change the activity if a participant becomes distressed or overwhelmed.

Does Virtual Public Transport replace one-to-one coaching?

No. It provides an additional practice environment. Professional input remains important for setting goals, discussing the experience and assessing application in everyday life.

The support needed differs by participant. We do not promise a fixed time saving or a reduction in guidance.

  • Why does Changefied use 6DoF VR technology?

Because 6DoF helps users transfer their skills to the real world. It creates a realistic, engaging experience, which is essential for neurodivergent users (e.g. autism, mild intellectual disability, acquired brain injury) who benefit from safe, repeatable training.

  • Virtual reality and motion sickness: what’s the connection?

In recent years, the VR industry has made enormous progress in reducing motion sickness, with considerable attention devoted to improving the technology and understanding its causes.

Why does VR make you feel sick?

Conflicting signals: Your brain receives conflicting information from your eyes and your balance system.

Depth perception: VR creates a sense of depth that your brain may not be able to process properly.

Fortunately, there are several approaches that can help reduce or even prevent motion sickness.

Here’s how we work on our games:

    1. Improved hardware and software: VR headset manufacturers are continually working to improve image quality, reduce latency and minimize motion blur, helping to reduce the risk of motion sickness.

    2. Optimizing motion algorithms: We implement advanced algorithms to regulate movement patterns and speeds, making the user experience smoother and more comfortable.

    3. Use a comfortable environment: Designing VR environments with less intense movement and fewer rapid changes can reduce the risk of motion sickness.

What you can do to reduce motion sickness:

    1. Make sure the room is well ventilated.

    2. Eat and drink enough, but not too much, before putting on your VR headset.

    3. Adjust the brightness of your VR headset to prevent sensory overload.

    4. Avoid too much light in the room.

    5. Adjust your headset’s interpupillary distance correctly.

    6. Avoid turning your head too much or too quickly.

  • How are safety and privacy ensured when using VR?

Changefied does not collect or link any usage data from individual users to the platform. This means no personal data is stored or shared, ensuring users’ privacy is fully protected. This approach minimizes the risk of data breaches and allows users to train anonymously and safely in VR.

In addition to this strict policy of not collecting user data, Changefied complies with GDPR regulations and uses encryption for data transfers where appropriate. Changefied also prioritises physical safety by recommending a safe VR user environment and guiding users with training and support.

This strong focus on privacy, combined with a safe user environment and transparent communication, makes Changefied’s VR solutions reliable and secure tools for healthcare and education.

In short: Changefied deliberately collects no user data, complies with privacy laws, and creates a safe, controlled VR experience for all participants.

  • How does VR support executive functioning and independence?

Virtual Reality (VR) training supports the development of executive functions by providing a safe, controlled and repeatable learning environment where users can practise skills such as planning, decision-making, problem-solving and goal-directed behaviour. Realistic, experiential scenarios actively engage users in training cognitive functions that are essential for self-regulation and independence. This process reduces fear of failure, as mistakes can be made without direct consequences, while immediate feedback helps improve skills.

Recent research highlights that VR gaming and specific VR training programmes can improve executive functioning, including processing speed, task accuracy and quality of life, particularly for people with brain injuries or neurodivergence. VR simulations also help users practise stress management, cognitive flexibility and impulse control, contributing to better self-organisation and independence in everyday life.

Specific VR applications, such as the Virtual OV platform, train planning, problem-solving and focus in real-life situations (for example, traveling independently on public transport). The powerful combination of 6DoF technology provides maximum freedom of movement and realism, helping users transfer the skills they learn to the real world.

  • Is VR more effective than traditional therapy?

No. VR is not a replacement for traditional therapy, but a powerful complement to it. VR offers unique benefits: safe, repeatable exposure, realistic simulations and measurable progress. It enhances existing methods and makes training more accessible, scalable and effective for groups such as neurodivergent people.
