Virtual OV is an innovative Virtual Reality platform originally developed as a specialized neurodivergent VR training for people with autism or a mild intellectual disability. However, the platform is valuable for anyone who wants to learn to travel independently using public transport, such as the elderly who wish to maintain their mobility or vocational students who need to travel independently to their internship location.
In a safe and realistic VR environment, users practice essential travel skills step by step. They train their executive functions – such as planning, focusing, and dealing with unexpected situations – and strengthen their procedural memory: the ability to perform actions automatically through repetition and experience.
In this way, travel routines become ingrained, self-confidence grows, and users build self-esteem. What was once daunting becomes second nature. Virtual Public Transport prepares people not only for traveling by public transport, but for participating independently in the real world.

Learning to travel on public transport
- Use a travel planner app or website to determine your route.
- Check in advance which bus or train you need to take, at what time, and where you need to transfer.
- Recognize important details, such as line numbers, departure times, and stops.
Select the correct bus or train
- Check the information boards at the stop or station to see if your bus or train is arriving.
- Pay close attention to the line number, the final destination, and any changes to the route or departure time.
- Use your working memory to remember at which stop you need to get off or change.
Dealing with unexpected situations such as delays
- Stay calm if your travel time changes or a train is delayed. Check alternatives in the app or on the board.
- Be flexible: sometimes you have to choose a different route or wait a moment.
- Try to come up with solutions, such as taking a different connection or asking public transport staff for help.
Social interactions
- Politeness towards fellow travelers and public transport staff.
- Ask drivers, conductors, or at an information desk for help if you are unsure of your connection.
